Building AG Remote: The Real-Time Mobile Command Center for Autonomous AI Agents
As software engineering rapidly evolves with autonomous AI agents capable of executing multi-step terminal tasks, editing thousands of lines of code, and running test suites autonomously, a glaring operational friction emerged: the physical keyboard tether
Developers and engineering leaders were forced to sit glued to their IDEs just to approve command executions, review git diffs, or check if background tasks finished without error. At EFE Technology, our internal AI engineering staff faced this exact bottleneck while running complex autonomous builds.
Why should an engineer be tied to their desk while an AI agent works autonomously in the background? Mobile supervision is the missing link in autonomous software engineering.
1. The Problem: The Supervision Bottleneck in Autonomous Coding
Autonomous developer agents like Google Antigravity, Claude Code, and Roo Code are capable of long-running workflows. However, they periodically pause to request user approvals—such as running destructive terminal commands, bypassing sandbox security, or selecting technical options. When an engineer steps away for coffee, a meeting, or a commute, the entire workflow halts, wasting hours of valuable developer velocity.
Existing solutions were clunky: standard SSH terminals lack structured JSON awareness, and screen mirrors (like TeamViewer or VNC) are battery-draining and illegible on an iPhone screen.
2. Why We Built It at EFE Venture Studio
In early 2026, EFE's AI Product Lab set out to build AG Remote—a dedicated, cross-platform command center that transforms an iPhone into an executive monitoring cockpit for AI engineering teams.
Visit the official platform at AG Remote (agremote.app) to see how the system operates in real time.
3. System Architecture & Engineering Deep-Dive
AG Remote relies on a 3-tier resilient architecture designed for zero configuration and instant reconnectivity:
macOS Background Go Daemon: A lightweight, memory-efficient native Go daemon (`ag-remote-go`) running quietly in the user space. It hooks into IDE transcripts and session logs, watching for approval prompts and streaming tool executions.
Realtime Secure Relay (WebSockets & End-to-End Encryption): Encrypted bi-directional tunnels relay agent states, tool outputs, and diff patches directly to the cloud relay with sub-50ms latency.
Native SwiftUI Client: An ultra-responsive iOS app designed with native Apple Human Interface Guidelines, featuring tactile push notifications, instant approve/reject buttons, and live Markdown log rendering.
4. Solving the Background Liveness Challenge
One of the hardest engineering challenges was ensuring that the Go daemon never crashes the host IDE while remaining resilient against macOS process terminations. We implemented an autonomous daemon watcher that safely compiles and swaps binaries using hot-swap mechanisms without dropping active WebSocket connections.
5. Impact & Looking Forward
Within EFE Technology, AG Remote reduced developer idle time by over 40%. Engineers now kick off comprehensive refactors or test generation suites before lunch or during commutes, receiving an instant Apple Watch or iPhone ping when review is required.
